Project Description

Home Libraries

BATB is passionate about literacy here in America.  Studies show there is a 30 million word gap between those kindergarten children who grew up with books in their home and those that did not.  Once we heard of this gap, we began to find ways to partner with schools to get books into the hands of children and increase the number of books in their students homes.  Building on relationships with educators and administrators in Texas, we are tackling illiteracy “one book at a time.”

During the 2017-18 school year through BATB’s “Fall Into Reading” program, 2 San Marcos, Texas elementary schools, 1200 students, received 6 new books for their home library.  Two Lubbock, Texas elementary schools and one San Marcos, Texas elementary school are being added to the 2018-19 school year.  2800 students will receive the gift of books.

Corporate and local philanthropy help make our “Fall Into Reading” program possible.  The San Marcos, Texas Lions Club is the primary donor for the San Marcos, Texas schools.  United Supermarkets and South Plains Lions Club are making the Lubbock, Texas schools book distribution a reality.

More schools will be added when funds become available.

Watch the excitement of children when they receive a new book for home.

For many student’s homes, what extra money is left at the end of the month won’t go toward books.
